"It's almost your birthday
music next to my bones"

What does feel like entering your 90th year in life?
What would be an appropriate gift?
If someone presents you with an amber
claiming it was the One
discovered by Bruno Hans Bürgel
I'm sure only you can quickly size it up
to see whether it's manufactured or real!

I knew of you by name decades ago
when you were hidden behind someone's glow
I marveled how brilliant was Pablo
when he versed such lines eternal:

"so many times we have seen the morning star burns, kissing our eyes,
and over our heads the gray light unwind in turning fans."

Without realizing it was YOU who brought that magnificence
into my world of poetic view
Only when I translated "I Like for You to Be Still"
I realized how well crafted are your silver pen 'n golden tongue
Only then I found they together also sang the beautiful Song of Roland.

Federico Garcia Lorca will forever owes his worldly fame to you.
The dictator Franco cut the young genius's journey short by taking his life
You broadened his spiritual paths of eternity well beyond Rome through
spreading his brilliant verse in the world

I can never imagine anyone who could achieve your prodigious statue in language:
French, German, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, Chinese,
Romanian, Greek, Irish, Quechuan, Eskimo, and Kabyle, to name just a few.
Your name is associated with translating some of the world's greatest epic poems.

I can never imagine anyone who lives a life that is so rich and so monumental
I wonder how many roads you haven't taken but I know how many you have taken
Your global footprints touched so many places and granted them with statue:
Spain, France, London, Boston, New York, Mexico……
and eventually you settled in Hawaii
turning a piece of wasteland into
one of the world's largest "Noah's Ark" for rare palm trees

I am intrigued by what epiphany takes you, the son
of a Presbyterian minister, to Buddhism
I fancy all the encounters you've been through as a world citizen
I admire how you can internalize your faith of childhood and grow
through untangling syntax to find your own voice, using your prophetic vision
and poetic gifts to give this world your transcending wisdom

I can never imagine how can anyone be as prolific in writing as you are
Every year or two come out books, poems, and papers that shine like stars
All these prizes and honors are not fast enough to be on par with you.

You are simply so ahead of your time, so far ahead of everyone's time
You are so fast in writing, faster than what my eyes could get hold of
You, I, He, She, They, It, the lines are so blurred and interchangeable
I'm lost, lost in your painful yet mesmerizing imagery words
I'm lost, lost in my experiencing the mankind's destructive capacity captured by you

Isn't it the truth that's what real life is like? A zombie-like world in isolation
where everyone lives in a projection superimposed by everyone else
Isn't it true that we all walk with aims in arranged paths
yet wander aimlessly in life's twilight zone
and willingly lost somewhere behind the veil of ignorance?

Only today I feel I start to get a clue of understanding you

Are we going to "wake without a question
even though the whole world is burning"?

The globe is a village, becoming
a dystopian domain by a few
Going extinction are free birds
Chip-coded are driven minds
Dream-forbidden are caring hearts
Brain-cleansed are free souls
Color-labeled are human classes
Number-assigned are names
Organ-played are women
Force-degraded are "inferior" races
Life-deprived are "unwanted" beings

Is that the Alt-Right view of a “Great Society”?
Is that the fanatics' view of a “Heaven on Earth” under “One Divine”?

We are Tweeting today with electricity.
Would we be imagining some day into the future

when all birds were exterminated
We'd mistaken Tweeting for real birds' singing in the nature?

Are we the witnesses combing through the history?
Are you the oracle speaking for our future destiny?

I wish you, the great poet, a happy 90th birthday!
I wish you have forever longevity, for today
We need a poet like you, with wisdom, guiding
the crowds to decipher what constitutes a great society.
