译罗宾森断情诗:约翰郭冉、歌:你的笑影

偶然翻书读到爱德温-罗宾森(Edwin Arlington Robinson)的诗,一下被吸引住了。罗宾森是美国诗人,1870年生于缅因州,普利策奖三度得主。他才华横溢却很潦倒,或许是命运不济。



断情诗《约翰郭冉》采用了男女对话的方式,诗中的男主角叫约翰郭冉(John Gorham),女主角叫珍妮微兰(Jane Wayland),诗描写了两人决裂前的对话,表面上看可谓公说公道婆说婆理。我觉得这首叙事诗很耐看,原因是它对诗中人物性格入木三分的刻划,诗的动感很强,而且真正的故事蕴藏在字里行间,需要读者自己根据蛛丝马迹去推断。读这诗时用左脑的机会似乎大过用右脑,心里不时会产生种种问号?这两人间到底有什么爱恨情仇?去年今日此月夜有什么故事?两人的年龄、身份、阶层、文化程度?谁是诗中真正的主角?双方的爱恨情仇谁应负更多责任?这是不是真正的分手?分手后哪个更痛苦?⋯⋯我想不同的人读此诗时感受不同,提出的问题也会大不相同。就我本人来说,我不想在此说明我对此诗的理解,以免扫大家的兴,诗本来就是要读者用自身的感觉、想像、激情和思维去经历的。我用的是意译,在翻译过程中不时要猜测诗人藏在字后的真意,猜错的概率是很高的,尤其对我来说一个很难的部份就是对话诗中男女主人公各自的口吻不同,不光如此,女主人公的口吻和用词很难掌握,因为读者对她的印象随著诗的深入和冲突的加剧在不断改变,新的问号不断产生,比如她的年龄、文化程度等等,总之她有很多烟幕弹,她真正的性格和智商并非象她想要别人相信的那样,所以翻译时我也尽可能反映出这个特点。此诗较长,所以中英文之间我分了段落,而不是将完整译文和原文各放一处。至于押韵,我就尽量照原作的格式翻译。

长吁短叹自怜得像是受了大冤。
逗我笑或让我走,这月光下两张拉长的脸
让我禁不住想说出那已被你遗忘的怨言。”

但只要你需要你可以随时将他们胡编滥造,
至于你说要匿迹,是我才要躲开你那圈套;
事实上你我如今情断义绝再无心结缠绕。”
“I’m sorry now you never saw the flocks, Jane Wayland;    
But you’re the one to make of them as many as you need.    
And then about the vanishing: it’s I who mean to vanish;            15

“That’s a way to tell me what I am, John Gorham!   
How am I to know myself until I make you smile?   
Try to look as if the moon were making faces at you,   
And a little more as if you meant to stay a little while.”

“You are what it is that over rose-blown gardens   
Makes a pretty flutter for a season in the sun.   
You are what it is that with a mouse, Jane Wayland,   
Catches him and let’s him go and eats him up for fun.”

“Sure I never took you for a mouse, John Gorham.            25
All you say is easy, but so far from being true    
That I wish you wouldn’t ever be again the one to think so;    
For it isn’t cats and butterflies that I would be to you.”

“All your little animals are in one picture—   
One I’ve had before me since a year ago to-night;            30
And the picture where they live will be of you, Jane Wayland,   
Till you find a way to kill them or to keep them out of sight.”
“难道你永远不解我的真实,约翰郭冉,
执迷不悟竟如此欲加之罪何患无辞?
在我茫茫内心某处有一个女人,只要你能找到她──
假如我能澄清悔过你是否会更欢喜?”

“我恐怕没有那么多闲工夫,珍妮微兰;
我敢说这围绕我们倾泻的月光不如
一无所获砸进长年废弃破罈的碎片,
              因为两人已经不再心心相倾如初。”

As on two that have no longer much of anything to tell.”

同样是断情的内容,译歌就相对容易些,因为歌是要听众立即产生共鸣的,在表达上就相对直接些,不象诗那样模棱多可,在口吻上是一个人的感情抒发,因此文化上只有一个层次。在此我译了《你的笑影》,源自伊利莎白-泰勒(Elizabeth Taylor)和里查-伯顿(Richard Burton)的电影,是许多歌星的最爱,其中以巴西歌手Astrud Gilberto 唱的最受欢迎,我本人则更喜欢Connie Francis的版本,此间的歌词是Shirley Bassey的版本。

The Shadow of Your Smile
One day we walk along the sand, one day in early spring
You held a piper in your hand to mend its broken wing
Now I’ll remember many a day and many a lonely mile
The echo of a piper’s song, the shadow of her smile.
